Plenty of Latakia but smooth enough to smoke all day. It is important that you dry it enough, because it burns very, very bad. It burns down to a fine ash at the end of the bowl. The main differences I found between this and a quality English/ Balkan mixture is: Penzance isn't as sweet or as flavorful & doesn't pack much of a Vitamin N punch. . Very good tobacco very smoky great tasting smooth silky just a very good smoke wish it was available more often. Nothing stood out too much and no wild punch anywhere. A puff after a sip highlights the wonderful smokiness of the latakia. As others have said, why send an alert if there is no possibility to actually order the product? This review is for Penzance, but I cannot understate how good Pembroke, And so to Bed, Margate, Dorchester ect. All I know is that whatever they're doing, it's working. I have about 20 tins cellared for over a year now. In my opinion, this is the best English available on the market. just one of those just gets better with age. Incense, very faint. It crumbles perfectly though, I mean that, perfect every time. It is best though after dinner. It came today; I loaded a family era Saseini bulldog and have been smoking this stuff most of the day such as it is. I am perplexed by the varied opinions & differences in defining the quality, or lack thereof about Penzance & after reading most all of the reviews, I've reached a conclusion there's simply a lack of "Quality Control" as each batch gets totally opposing reviews on taste, flavoring & strength declarations. B&M's tend to keep it in stock longer than online retailers. I'd like to thank Bobby G at Pipes & Cigars for the 8 oz. It is a crumble cake (not a flake), and packs as easily as any blend in the world. A great Balkan at a very reasonable price is "Arango Balkan Supreme" I know, I know.. The first thing one will notice about Penzance is the form and appearance - a dark, oily flake with flecks of brown and gold. I liked it. Very delicious indeed . It is a quality english mixture, with oily flakes that quickly crumble into fine pieces. I have not been corrupted by the cost and the scarcity of the blend, this is as unbiased of a review as I can muster. Unfortunately, they do not shine through as I think they should. There is little on its intricacies that I can write so I will simply offer an opinion of this gift from above. An interesting note is how the cakes are pressed together with a mildly floral sauce. After a third of a bowl I had to dump it out. Esoterica's Penzance is one of the finest traditional English Flakes available anywhere. Penzance is a spicy smooth Oriental smoke that has minimal Latakia and Nicotine. It was 8oz's of 2-3 year old penzance. This is very good and I can not realy add much to the other reviews(positive ones). It's sometimes buttery, sometimes bitter, but rarely sweet. It truly is a shame that Penzance is hard to get now, how people buy it out and hoard it, and worst of all are those who buy it only to sell on eBay for ridiculously price gouged amounts, this goes against everything the pipe community is about. I almost wonder why I bother. Also, while it ages very well indeed in a sealed tin, I have no evidence to date that it improves with age in a jar. The orientals dont strike me as so forward as some others seem to taste, to me it's pretty consistent with most english mixtures in oriental to lat ratio. Because it breaks apart very easily, there's several ways to fill your pipe with it, and one way is as good as another, though I prefer to pack it a little loose so it burns easier in the last quarter of the bowl. You may appreciate that if you are a gardener, it is like the smell of fresh loamy garden soil, perhaps with a bit of mulch. It packed better than most flakes lit easily but needed a few light tampings and relights.especially toward the end, but I didn't mind at all. Today I took my trusty tin to work and was reminded of the delicious flavor of this high quality blend. Towards the end of the bowl I was picking up a sweetness almost as if I was tasting the briar along with with the tobacco. Rubbs out with little to no effort and smokes to a nice white ash. With a good, full flavored English such as this, I look for the presence of Nicotine to really put me into a state of relaxation, or stimulation, as the case may be. We all understand the market forces that create the demand for this blend and dislike it, so i won't wade into that mess. The smoke is thick and delicious, and yet this is a tobacco that I could likely smoke all day long. It's heavy on the Latakia and Orientals. The mottled flake is unusual and I began by smoking it like any other flake. The second funny was when I got a call from my local tobacconist at Mission Pipe in downtown San Jose. No doubt you can taste the Latakia & Orientals. Nothing can or should detract from that. It was my first experience with a crumble cake. The moisture level is about right to perhaps a little moist (nothing a few minutes won't fix). Burns cool and clean and there is nothing else quite like it around that I have come across. Don't bother buying a 2 ounce sample of this stuff, get the 8 ounce container, or two, or three. It is full and rich enough to satisfy just about any English blend smoker, and the burning properties are excellent. The taste to me is flat. Nightcap is better. Back when I was around 18 or 19 one could legally buy beer. You were able to pick up some sweetness in the background from the Virginia and the spice was on the spot from the Orientals in the 1991 blend. Opens to the definate smell latakia and has a wonderful musty smell. a worthy stablemate to it's tasty cousin pembroke. The word is "tranquility". One word of caution: when you open a tin, try to either smoke it all within a few days or transfer it to a glass jar, as it loses some of its character soon after opening. I must say, you have to have a taste for this. There's probably no point in adding to what previous reviewers have said about this exemplary English flake, other than to say that, if it were available here, I'd probably smoke it pretty regularly, even though I'm not usually a great Latakia fan. It provides a nice eucalyptus-esque flavor, and is not entirely unlike King Charles. I became excited and quickly replied to the ad demanding that I be sold/given penzance immediately and that I would do anything for the chance. Sorry about the repeat. Over the course of a couple weeks (the time it took to smoke the entire tin) I have continued my love affair. It appears as lovely dark brown bits of goodness. Creamy smooth just a bit of natural sweetness. This is the best English Flake tobacco I ever smoked! A couple of years ago I would have easily given this four stars. Into the garbage it went and my search began for older issues of this blend. The blend age's well and worth putting up. Penzance leans a little more toward sweetness with a licorice-like taste. As with many tobaccos this requires a little time before you will master the technique that works for you. Penzance came to mind immediately. Margate is a maiden while Penzance is a matriarch. Not going to bore you with a bunch of tobacconist words ! The second bowl was in my fairly large three quarter bent. This is a blend of Va.s, turkish , oriental and Latakias togeter they sing in harmoney, Upon opening the tin I first had a hard time defining what I smelled Not bad at all but different a somewhat Smokey Beef Jerky mixed with an old woodsey smell. PLEASE READ TO END WITH UPDATE of 4/20/12 !! The tobacco in this tin was still moist, but not dripping wet, per usual. Second, the crumble cake cut allows the smoker to rub it out to their liking. Pack it loosely and don't tamp it down much at all. While Penzance is basically an "Oriental-forward English blend", this characterization falls well short of a complete description. Anyway, that smell. So in a sense, my 3 star rating is more for how it suited ME rather than a recommendation to others. This blend has a very low tolerance for man-handling. I prefer blends with a full flavor and respectable nicotine punch, and Penzance has neither. If some alchemist could turn a bottle of 60 year-old Single Malt Islay Scotch into a pipe tobacco blend, that blend would taste like Penzance. This is a nice Oriental blend. It has as creamy and thick of a mouth feel as any tobacco I have ever smoked. It is a wonderful complex secret recipe of the finest Virginia, choice Turkish, Orientals and Cyprian Latakia. There isn't anything bad I can say about this tobacco. That is to say some of the characteristics are lost, and the smoking experience is rather dull and subdued, but in a good way. Am I just unlucky to have ordered 2 bags from different tobacco shops and both being almost unsmokable ? I used to smoke it when it was almost available, I searched for it when it became unavailable. As I used to be mostly an aromatic smoker, I was a bit afraid this blend would be too much for me to handle. In the pipe it is an excellent, balanced English with a nice sense of age. You betcha. Now, my only gripe is getting the hang of packing this tobacco just right. This crap disintegrated in my hands as I went to fill a bowl, leaving me with what looked like dried-up contaminated potting soil. I call this a complex smoke, I call it wonderful, I ordered a bunch in bulk for aging, and I can't wait to try some after it's been resting a year or two. As one might expect, tongue bite is never an issue. Strong and creamy at the same time. Fairly one dimensional but not bad at all. I have a couple of tins sitting around in my pipe humidor for when I get the urge for this unique blend. Overall this tobacco was worth the wait and was enjoyablehowever, there are other blends that are right up there that are easier to obtain. A note regarding aging: I've never had one of these little square tins fail, but I have found rust in them after a few years.
